Helping Our Community Reduce Pests Safely
Our Pest Trap Libraries (PTLs) make predator control simple, accessible, and completely free for our community. Locals can borrow the right trap for their property, get the training they need, and start protecting native wildlife straight away.
The goal is simple:
Remove introduced mammalian pests so our native birds, plants, and ecosystems can thrive across the Bay of Plenty.
There are now Pest Trap Libraries available in:
Tauranga, Oropi, Whakamārama, Waihi Beach, and Te Puke — with more communities joining the movement every year.
How the Pest Trap Libraries Work
On this page, you’ll find everything you need to use your trap safely and effectively — including guides, videos, tips, and downloadable notices.
Predator Free Bay of Plenty coordinates the Tauranga, Oropi, and Te Puke Pest Trap Libraries with support from Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

Borrowing a Trap
Borrowing a trap is easy and free.
Traps are loaned for 3 months, with the option to renew for another 3 months depending on demand.
You’ll complete a simple loan agreement.
Our team will give you a quick, friendly demonstration so you feel confident setting, baiting, and placing your trap safely.
We’ll help match you with the best trap type depending on your property, target pest, and safety considerations.
Working Together to Bring Back Native Birds
Every trap borrowed, every rat or possum removed, and every household that participates contributes to a stronger, safer environment for birds like tūī, ruru, kererū, and fantails.
Your efforts — small or large — make a real impact.
💚 With your help, we’re creating predator-free neighbourhoods across the Bay of Plenty.
